Oil Surge Above $100 Drives Nifty, Sensex to Six-Month Lows

by admin477351

Indian stock markets experienced a sharp decline on Monday, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex hitting their lowest levels in nearly six months. This downturn coincided with a surge in crude oil prices, which climbed above $100 a barrel, exacerbating concerns over global economic stability.

The Nifty 50 dropped 1.6% to close at 22,780.25, marking its lowest point since April 2, while the Sensex decreased by 1.5%. This slump occurred within a broader context of caution across global markets, where major Asian markets also recorded losses.

Brent crude futures reached approximately $107 a barrel, peaking at $108.83, driven by fears of prolonged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. This heightened uncertainty has raised worries about energy supply issues and inflationary pressures.

India, which imports around 90% of its oil requirements, stands particularly vulnerable to elevated crude prices. A continued rise in oil costs could escalate the import bill, increase inflationary pressures, and negatively impact corporate profit margins and economic growth. Additionally, higher prices for LNG and fertilizers may intensify these challenges.

So far this year, the Nifty has declined about 13%, with the Nifty PSU Bank index falling 3.2%. Realty and oil and gas stocks also witnessed notable losses. Meanwhile, the rupee weakened by 0.2%, settling at 95.9850 against the US dollar.

Adding to the pressure on emerging markets are rising global inflation and higher US bond yields. The US 10-year Treasury yield is approaching 5%, sparking concerns about potential capital outflows and limiting central banks’ ability to maintain lower interest rates.

Market participants are closely monitoring the Reserve Bank of India’s upcoming policy review for insights into interest rates, inflation, and economic growth. Persistent strength in crude oil prices could further strain the rupee and influence the central bank’s policy outlook.
