Delhi-NCR Enacts GRAP Stage I as Air Quality Worsens to Poor Category

by admin477351

Authorities in Delhi-NCR have activated Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as air quality has worsened to the “poor” category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 233. This measure is part of a strategy to mitigate pollution levels through stricter control of dust, vehicle emissions, waste burning, and industrial activities.

GRAP Stage I is triggered when the AQI scores between 201 and 300 and focuses on reducing pollution at the source through preventive measures and enhanced monitoring. Specific actions under this stage include enforcing dust control at construction sites, prohibiting open waste burning, promoting the use of cleaner cooking fuels in commercial establishments, and regulating the use of diesel generator sets.

Additionally, authorities will keep a close watch on visibly polluting vehicles, enforce compliance with emission standards for industrial units and power plants, and manage traffic to reduce congestion. Residents are also encouraged to maintain their vehicles, minimize engine idling, use public transportation when feasible, and report pollution incidents through official channels.

The implementation of these measures comes as Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 18°C, with daytime highs expected to reach around 31°C. Minimum temperatures at various monitoring stations in the city ranged between 17.7°C and 19.1°C. The current air quality, classified as “poor,” can lead to breathing discomfort, particularly for individuals with respiratory or other health issues.

Authorities are committed to ongoing monitoring of air quality levels and will continue to implement necessary actions to prevent further deterioration. The focus remains on ensuring compliance with pollution-control measures to safeguard public health amid rising pollution levels in the region.
