India and Poland have agreed to enhance their cooperation in several strategic areas, including defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This decision came after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, where they also discussed plans to double bilateral trade by 2030.
The discussions highlighted opportunities for joint development and production in key sectors such as defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. Both leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi invited Polish companies to engage with India in co-development and co-production efforts, while Tusk underscored the need to diversify access to critical minerals and strategic resources to bolster economic security.
Currently, the bilateral trade between the two countries stands at approximately $6.3 billion, and both nations aim to increase this figure significantly by 2030. A delegation of nearly 100 Polish companies is actively exploring business opportunities in various sectors, including defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.
In addition to economic ties, the two sides plan to establish a bilateral startup bridge and develop partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will further enhance opportunities for exports and investment.
Defence cooperation is a primary focus of the bilateral relationship, with India and Poland working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to facilitate closer defence-industrial collaboration. They have also agreed to set up a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue. The countries are exploring the joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies, benefiting from the broader strategic partnership between India and the European Union.
The meeting also covered regional and international issues, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and developments in West Asia. Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, while Polish officials welcomed India’s calls for a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine conflict. The leaders also acknowledged the longstanding people-to-people ties between the two nations, including Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and the historical support provided to Polish refugees in India during World War II.
This meeting marks a significant step forward in strengthening India-Poland relations, with both governments committed to expanding trade, enhancing strategic cooperation, and building more resilient supply chains.
