Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service, scheduled just before the Chhath Puja festivities from November 13 to 16. The service aims to enhance access to the river and provide a unique way for families to engage in the upcoming celebrations.
Gupta recently conducted an inspection of the ferry at Sonia Vihar Sports Club and visited Sur Ghat, the site of the Chhath Puja celebrations. This area is being developed as a family-friendly picnic destination, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic riverside environment and participate in religious offerings to the Yamuna River.
The ferry service will cover a five-kilometre route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, offering passengers picturesque views of the ghats and the natural riverbanks. Tickets for the one-hour journey are expected to be priced at approximately ₹500 per person, according to government officials.
Initially planned to commence on February 20, the launch was delayed due to incomplete project work. The ferry’s infrastructure includes jetties equipped with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas to accommodate passengers.
The vessel, named Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. The 40-foot catamaran-style boat is designed for stability and is well-suited to navigating the shallow stretches of the Yamuna River.
