A Canadian ad featuring Ronald Reagan has prompted president Trump to pull the plug on all trade negotiations with the northern ally.
Trump, posting on truth social, called the ad “fraudulent” and “fake,” accusing Canada of “egregious behavior.”
The ad, from Ontario, was a protest against 35% US tariffs. It used a 1987 clip of Reagan warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
The ad has also drawn criticism from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the speech and was used without permission.
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, freezes a c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship and escalates the ongoing trade war.
