Delhi has reported 2,392 cases of influenza-A this year, with 1,777 of them identified as H1N1, leading the city’s health minister to convene a meeting with key health officials. On Monday, Health Minister Pankaj Singh gathered municipal health officers and representatives from government hospitals to assess the situation and strategize on the response.
In response to the rising numbers, Singh has directed medical institutions to bolster their efforts in screening, reporting, and monitoring influenza-like illnesses and severe respiratory infections. Hospitals have received specific instructions to adhere to established treatment protocols, ensure proper patient care, and implement home-care guidelines. Additionally, healthcare workers are undergoing training to effectively identify symptoms and manage patient monitoring.
Assuring the public, Singh emphasized that there is no need for alarm, as Delhi has sufficient hospital beds, medical personnel, medications, and necessary medical equipment. He encouraged residents to practice good respiratory and hand hygiene, wear masks in crowded places, avoid close interactions with individuals showing respiratory symptoms, and seek professional medical advice rather than resorting to self-medication.
While the number of H1N1 cases is increasing, it remains below the figures seen in Delhi’s past significant outbreak years, when cases exceeded 3,000. Health officials have stated that the situation is under close surveillance, with hospitals enhancing their readiness to handle any possible surge in cases.
Medical experts have pointed out several factors contributing to the rise in cases, including seasonal weather changes, low rates of influenza vaccination, and an uptick in testing among patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms. Despite these challenges, the healthcare system in Delhi is reportedly prepared to manage the situation effectively.
