India and Switzerland have signed five agreements designed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, mobility, and technology. The agreements were signed on Monday following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin. The focus of the talks was to expand bilateral relations in trade, defense, nuclear energy, technology, and investment.
The agreements encompass several areas such as migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. A key aspect of the agreements is improving market access for Indian exports and fostering greater investment opportunities. This development coincides with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which aims to boost investment, trade, and employment between India and the EFTA countries.
India anticipates that improved access to Swiss markets will benefit its exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. In return, Swiss companies are encouraged to invest in various sectors in India, including biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.
One of the agreements focuses on a migration and mobility partnership, aimed at strengthening cooperation while tackling issues like irregular migration and human trafficking. This agreement includes multiple-entry visas for up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, a separate agreement facilitates the exchange of young professionals, allowing up to 300 individuals from each country to seek temporary employment and gain professional and language experience annually.
The discussions between India and Switzerland also covered potential collaborations in military exchanges, defense production, and nuclear energy. Both countries plan to initiate joint research projects in fields such as health, clean energy, and space, and promote cooperation in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, electric vehicles, tunnels, and other mobility systems. These agreements are expected to bolster collaboration among research institutions, businesses, and technology companies in both nations.
During their meeting, Modi and Parmelin also addressed global and regional issues, including conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. Both leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in these regions.
