Merchandise trade between India and Canada has seen significant growth, recording double-digit increases in the first eight months of 2026. This development comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a visit to Canada in December, signaling a strengthening of economic ties between the two nations.

Canada’s merchandise exports to India amounted to CA$3.03 billion from January to August 2026, marking a 36.7% rise compared to the same period in the previous year. Key exports included metals and minerals, which made up 41% of the shipments, followed by agri-food products at 16.9%.

On the import side, Canada’s merchandise imports from India reached CA$7.05 billion during the same period, reflecting a 10.2% increase year-on-year. In 2025, Canadian exports to India totaled CA$3.9 billion, while imports from India were CA$9.7 billion.

High-level discussions and business initiatives have further bolstered bilateral engagement. A Canadian trade delegation, consisting of nearly 300 participants, successfully secured 34 commercial agreements valued at approximately CA$300 million. These agreements encompass sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

Both nations are actively working on advancing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with five rounds of talks completed. Further discussions are planned as India and Canada aim to finalize the agreement by December.

Discussions between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have focused on enhancing bilateral relations. Officials from both countries continue to explore opportunities for expanding trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as mobility.
