In a gesture of diplomatic respect, Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, traveled to Doha to express India’s condolences following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit highlights the enduring and robust ties between India and Qatar.
During his time in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to extend condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju characterized the late Father Amir as a visionary leader, pivotal in Qatar’s growth and in fortifying the strategic alliance with India. He emphasized that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns his loss, honoring his contributions with profound respect.
Prime Minister Modi had previously acknowledged the Father Amir’s significant role in enhancing bilateral relations, describing him as a true friend of India. As a tribute, India observed a national day of mourning on July 13, 2026, during which the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings and official entertainment activities were suspended.
