US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has embarked on a four-day diplomatic mission in India, commencing Saturday, with the primary objective of bolstering strategic alliances and enhancing collaboration across trade, defense, energy, and technology sectors. The visit underscores the importance of India-US relations amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.

Rubio is set to engage in bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and will also meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. His visit coincides with the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) meeting, which includes foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. This gathering is poised to address crucial issues such as Indo-Pacific security and defense partnerships, particularly in the context of China’s expanding influence in the region.

Key discussions will likely revolve around critical technologies, including semiconductors and artificial intelligence, as well as ensuring resilient supply chains. The bilateral talks aim to address trade tensions that have lingered since President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Indian exports. Both nations are anticipated to seek ways to enhance economic cooperation and mitigate trade-related challenges.

Energy security is another focal point of Rubio’s visit. The United States is keen to increase its crude oil and LNG exports to India, while ongoing negotiations concern India’s acquisition of discounted Russian oil. Defense collaboration remains a cornerstone of the bilateral dialogue, with India operating several US-made defense platforms such as Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft and MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones. Discussions are expected to explore opportunities for joint production and collaboration in advanced defense and space technologies.

During his stay, Rubio will travel to several Indian cities, including Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, he plans to visit the Missionaries of Charity headquarters, founded by Mother Teresa, highlighting the cultural and humanitarian aspects of his visit. Through these engagements, Rubio aims to reinforce the multifaceted partnership between the United States and India.
