In a move poised to strengthen ties in the Indo-Pacific region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, aiming to enhance strategic, economic, and maritime collaborations with the nation. As two of the largest democracies in the Indo-Pacific and active members of the G20, India and Indonesia are gearing up to expand their cooperative efforts across various sectors such as trade, technology, healthcare, and defense. This visit follows Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India in January 2025, which celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and saw the signing of several agreements in areas like health, maritime security, and digital cooperation.
Despite their historical ties and mutual interests, the bilateral trade between India and Indonesia currently stands at approximately $30 billion. Both countries are determined to tap into more economic opportunities, with India particularly interested in boosting investments in Indonesia’s sectors like critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security. These efforts are expected to unlock the economic potential that both nations aim to realize in their partnership.
A significant focus of Modi’s visit will be on digital collaboration, as Indonesia shows interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. The two nations are also exploring areas of cooperation in fields such as artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, and digital payments, alongside support for small businesses, marking a comprehensive approach to digital governance.
Maritime security continues to be a critical area of collaboration, with plans to enhance cooperation in the strategic Strait of Malacca, increase naval collaboration, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defense-industrial partnerships. Indonesia’s interest in diversifying its defense suppliers may present new opportunities for India’s defense sector, potentially leading to mutually beneficial outcomes.
The visit is also expected to bolster people-to-people exchanges by fostering stronger academic, business, and cultural partnerships. This approach aims to build a more comprehensive and long-lasting relationship between India and Indonesia, reinforcing their commitment to mutual growth and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.
