The internal crisis within Shiv Sena (UBT) is escalating as two of its Lok Sabha members of parliament, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have officially joined the faction led by Eknath Shinde. This development marks a significant gain for the dissident faction as it now includes six MPs who have distanced themselves from Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership. Ashtikar explained that his decision was influenced by the scarcity of development funds for his constituency and dissatisfaction with derogatory remarks aimed at rebel MPs. He emphasized that he remains committed to Shiv Sena’s ideology, clarifying that his move was to a different faction within the party to better serve his constituents.
Similarly, Nimbalkar has confirmed his alignment with the Shinde-led group but noted that he plans to continue seeking guidance from his constituency’s supporters before deciding on any further political actions. He also made it clear that he would refrain from criticizing Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray despite the current political rift. Meanwhile, Sanjay Raut, a leader within the Shiv Sena (UBT), stated that some rebel MPs are still in communication with the party and are apprehensive about the potential negative reaction from their constituents. He indicated the party’s openness to discussions with any MPs willing to return.
In response to the defections, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction has commenced disciplinary measures against the six MPs, issuing new show-cause notices and cautioning them about potential consequences under the anti-defection law. Additionally, party leaders are contemplating bringing the matter to the Lok Sabha Speaker to seek disqualification of these members if they do not adequately address the notices.
The rebellion has heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, leading to a flurry of accusations between the factions. Amidst the turmoil, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed claims suggesting its involvement in facilitating the defections. As the situation unfolds, both sides continue to navigate the complex political landscape, seeking to consolidate their respective positions.
