Starmer Backs Burnham Amid Leadership Whispers

by admin477351

Keir Starmer has dismissed growing rumours about a potential challenge from Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, insisting Burnham is performing “a really good job.” The prime minister pressed his party to avoid fuelling divisions.
Leadership talk intensified after Burnham repeatedly sidestepped questions about whether he might one day stand against Starmer. His vague responses came at a sensitive moment, with Labour facing weak poll numbers and preparing for a high-stakes budget.
During his flight to the G20 summit, Starmer emphasised his strong working relationship with Burnham. He recalled contacting him immediately after the synagogue attack in Manchester, saying the mayor provided crucial updates.
Starmer urged colleagues to steer clear of internal battles, especially after reports circulated that senior figures believed Wes Streeting was planning a move against him. He argued that such speculation distracts from addressing the cost-of-living crisis.
Burnham, meanwhile, continued to publicise his new growth plan. While stating he has launched no challenge, he refused to rule out future possibilities, leaving observers guessing about his long-term ambitions.
