In a significant political shift ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections next year, Syed Asim Waqar, the national spokesperson for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has joined the Congress party. Waqar made the transition at Congress’s headquarters in New Delhi, where he was welcomed by prominent figures including Rajendra Pal Gautam, the Congress in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, state party president Ajay Rai, and Imran Pratapgarhi, chairman of the AICC Minority Department.
Waqar’s departure from AIMIM comes with sharp criticism of the party led by Asaduddin Owaisi. He accused AIMIM of claiming to oppose the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while primarily targeting Congress, the Samajwadi Party, and other opposition factions in its electoral strategies. Waqar emphasized the need for opposition unity against the BJP, asserting that Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi are the primary national contenders to the ruling party. His statements highlight his rationale for leaving AIMIM and joining Congress.
Previously a notable voice for AIMIM in Uttar Pradesh, Waqar had been closely associated with Owaisi. His defection is a strategic move as AIMIM attempts to broaden its political footprint in the state, looking ahead to the 2027 Assembly elections. Despite this ambition, Waqar’s move could bolster Congress’s strategy to consolidate opposition forces in the region.
