Hamas finds itself in a diplomatic pressure cooker as the international community, from Washington to Moscow and Delhi, coalesces around a US-led peace plan for Gaza. President Donald Trump has effectively isolated the militant group by securing the backing of Israel and the entire Arab world for his 20-point proposal.
With this united front, Trump has issued a 3-4 day ultimatum to Hamas, warning them to accept the terms or face the consequences. “All of the Arab countries are signed up, the Muslim countries all signed up, Israel’s all signed up. We’re just waiting for Hamas,” Trump stated, portraying the group as the lone impediment to peace.
The plan itself is a roadmap to end the brutal conflict. It calls for Hamas to disarm and relinquish control of Gaza. In return, a ceasefire would be implemented, Israeli troops would withdraw, all hostages would be freed, and a prisoner exchange would take place. Crucially, the plan also provides for a massive aid effort to combat the famine in Gaza.
The war began on October 7, 2023, after a Hamas attack killed 1,200 people in Israel. The subsequent Israeli military response has resulted in over 66,000 Palestinian deaths. The US proposal aims to end this cycle of violence permanently by removing Hamas from the equation.
Hamas is now reviewing the deal, facing the combined diplomatic weight of the world. Their decision will show whether this immense international pressure is enough to force a surrender and bring an end to one of the region’s deadliest conflicts.
