In response to ongoing student protests and allegations of police misconduct, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has reassured the public, particularly the young population, of the Supreme Court’s dedication to safeguarding their rights and upholding justice through proper legal channels. Addressing the concerns, he underlined the court’s commitment to hearing every duly filed petition in compliance with the law, ensuring that justice is served where necessary.
The Chief Justice emphasized the openness of the Supreme Court, asserting that its doors remain accessible to all citizens seeking justice. He clarified that the court had not previously refused to address the issue since no formal petition had been recorded at that time. Instead, what had been submitted was a representation, which does not fulfill the legal criteria required for initiating judicial proceedings.
As recent petitions highlighting allegations of police excesses during the protests on July 20 have now been formally filed, the Supreme Court has agreed to schedule them for a hearing on Monday. This development marks a significant step toward addressing the grievances raised by the protestors through the judicial system.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice cautioned against any inaccurate media reports suggesting that the court had declined to hear the case. He stressed the importance of fair and precise reporting, underscoring the Supreme Court’s role in ensuring justice while maintaining transparency and accountability.
