India is actively engaging with the United States to address concerns over recent changes in U.S. visa regulations that may impact Indian students and academic visitors. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed during a media briefing on Friday that New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation and plans to continue discussions with Washington to resolve any issues faced by Indian nationals.
The updated regulations, implemented by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, introduce more stringent residency requirements for F, J, and I visa holders, which include international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. These changes stipulate fixed periods of stay for non-immigrant visa holders in these categories, replacing the previous system that allowed individuals to reside in the U.S. for extended durations without ongoing federal oversight.
In addition to these modifications, the grace period for F visa holders has been shortened. Students now have 30 days, as opposed to the previous 60 days, to either leave the U.S., transfer to another educational institution, or alter their immigration status upon completing their studies.
Indian officials have underscored that visa and immigration policies are sovereign decisions of each nation. However, they have reiterated their dedication to assisting Indian citizens and reducing any difficulties arising from the new U.S. regulations.
