Thailand Revokes 60-Day Visa-Free Entry for Indian Travelers

by admin477351

Thailand is set to tighten its visa policies, terminating the temporary 60-day visa-free entry scheme that had been available to travelers from various countries, including India. This shift signals a return to more stringent entry requirements, potentially impacting travel plans for Indian tourists who frequent Thailand, a favored destination in Asia. Under the newly approved regulations, Indian nationals will now need to secure a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or apply for an e-Visa before traveling to Thailand.

The introduction of the Visa on Arrival option means that Indian visitors can now stay in Thailand for a maximum of 15 days per entry, a significant reduction from the previous 60-day allowance. For those looking to bypass airport queues, the alternative option is to apply online through Thailand’s official e-Visa system prior to their trip. Industry experts anticipate that these changes might lead to a decrease in spontaneous travel and last-minute holiday bookings due to the additional paperwork, application process, and associated visa fees.

Despite these new barriers, Thailand is expected to maintain its appeal among Indian tourists, thanks to its affordable travel options, convenient flight connections, wide-ranging tourist attractions, and robust hospitality sector. However, the revised rules could pose challenges for long-stay visitors, digital nomads, and those planning extended multi-city holidays, who might now consider other Southeast Asian destinations with more lenient entry requirements.

The updated visa regulations are scheduled to take effect 15 days following their publication in the Royal Gazette. Travelers who enter Thailand before this implementation date will be subject to the previous regulations and can remain in the country until their current entry validity expires. Initially, Thailand had expanded visa-free access in 2024 to bolster tourism and economic recovery post-pandemic, which successfully increased visitor numbers and reinforced the country’s status as a premier destination for leisure, family vacations, and special events.

Officials have attributed the decision to tighten entry regulations to concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the necessity for stronger immigration control. The new policy framework aims to balance the growth of tourism with effective border management and regulatory oversight. Prospective travelers are advised to check the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines to ensure a seamless travel experience to Thailand.
