The government of West Bengal has unveiled a significant financial initiative aimed at preserving the cultural heritage associated with the Rath Yatra festival. In an unprecedented move, the administration has allocated ₹5 lakh each to 60 Rath Yatra committees statewide, with the funds specifically earmarked for the restoration and upkeep of historical chariots. This is the first instance of direct financial support being extended by the state for these celebrations.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the age and fragility of many traditional wooden chariots, some of which date back centuries and are in dire need of repair. The funding is intended to ensure these cultural treasures are adequately preserved. Adhikari called upon the committees to utilize the financial aid effectively for the restoration work.
In addition to the financial assistance, the government has planned a symbolic gesture to enhance the festive atmosphere. During the 30-km Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district, helicopters will be deployed to shower flower petals on the devotees participating in the procession. This aerial display is part of the broader efforts to enrich the spiritual experience for pilgrims.
Furthermore, the state has announced the establishment of Seva Kendras at 75 fair locations. These centers will be equipped to provide essential services to pilgrims, including medical aid, police assistance, and access to drinking water. These efforts aim to ensure the safety and comfort of those participating in the Yatra.
Looking ahead, West Bengal plans to increase its financial support to more Rath Yatra committees in the future. As part of a broader strategy to boost religious tourism, the state is investing ₹1,000 crore over the next three years into the development of the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This ambitious project aims to promote pilgrimage, restore historic temples, and enhance the overall cultural landscape of the region.
