India’s ambitious infrastructure expansion is drastically shortening travel times across key routes, as detailed in a recent government factsheet. The new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, for instance, is set to reduce the road journey between the two cities to about 12 hours from the previous 33-hour trek.
Among other significant developments, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway now enables travelers to complete the journey in roughly 50 minutes, down from 2.5 hours. Similarly, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has cut travel time from nearly three hours to approximately 75 minutes. In the north, the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor slashes the trip duration to 2.5 hours, down from over six hours.
Elsewhere, the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg is transforming connectivity by reducing travel time to eight hours from the initial 16. The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway further enhances accessibility by cutting the Delhi-Amritsar journey to four hours, while reducing the Delhi-Katra travel time to six hours from a prior 14.
Infrastructure projects, including bridges and tunnels, are also playing a crucial role in enhancing regional connectivity. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu in the Northeast cuts travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to one. The Bogibeel Bridge and Kosi Rail Mahasetu in Bihar have similarly shortened vital routes, with the latter reducing the rail journey between Nirmali and Saraigarh to just 30 minutes.
Rail services are seeing improvements as well, with the introduction of Vande Bharat trains on major routes. The New Delhi-Varanasi service now takes about eight hours, while the Katra-Srinagar service is reduced to approximately three hours. The upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is set to revolutionize travel between these cities, promising a journey time of under two hours upon its targeted completion in August 2027.
