India has joined forces with the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya to launch the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) platform, aimed at enhancing multilateral cooperation and reforming global institutions. The announcement was made during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the growing need for multilateral collaboration in light of escalating geopolitical tensions and conflicts worldwide. He advocated for a more inclusive approach to discussions and decision-making within international organizations to effectively address these challenges.
The P4M initiative focuses on key areas requiring international cooperation, such as international security, climate change, emerging technologies, and development finance. It also addresses the importance of resilient supply chains, pandemic preparedness, and counterterrorism efforts, according to Jaishankar.
The declaration from P4M members calls for reforming the multilateral system to enhance its effectiveness, representation, and inclusivity. The platform also supports initiatives in sustainable development, fair trade, global finance, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and global health.
To facilitate these goals, the participating countries have agreed to establish a coordination mechanism and identify priority areas for joint action. The P4M platform remains open to other nations that wish to bolster multilateral cooperation, inviting further participation to strengthen global partnerships.
